Now in ruins, in the 11th century, it served as the first capital of the\u00a0Hammadid\u00a0dynasty. It is in the\u00a0Hodna mountains\u00a0northeast of\u00a0M&#8217;Sila, at an elevation of 1,418 metres , and receives abundant water from the surrounding mountains. The site is near the town of Maadid\u00a0(aka Maadhid), about 225 kilometres (140\u00a0mi) southeast of\u00a0Algiers, in the\u00a0Maghreb.<\/p><p>In 1980, it was inscribed as a\u00a0World Heritage Site\u00a0by\u00a0UNESCO\u00a0under the name\u00a0<b>Al Qal&#8217;a of Beni Hammad<\/b>, and described as &#8220;an authentic picture of a fortified Muslim city&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The town includes a 7-kilometre (4\u00a0mi) long line of walls. Inside the walls are four residential complexes, and the largest mosque built in Algeria after that of\u00a0Mansurah. It is similar in design to the\u00a0Grand Mosque of Kairouan, with a tall minaret, 20 metres (66\u00a0ft).<\/p><p>Excavations have brought to light numerous terracotta, jewels, coins and ceramics testifying to the high level of civilization under the\u00a0Hammadid\u00a0dynasty. Also among the artifacts discovered are several decorative fountains using the lion as a motif.
