As part of the university’s scientific activities, and under the supervision of Professor Rejem Ali, Director of the Institute of Urban Techniques Management at Mohamed Boudiaf University of M’sila, and his deputy, Dr. Hadj Hafsi Lahcen, Assistant Director in charge of Postgraduate Studies, Scientific Research, and External Relations, the institute hosted a workshop on December 3, 2025, entitled “The Meaning of the City” (Le sens de la ville).
The opening session was attended by professors and students of the institute. Professor Krouj Toufik presented the morning session, addressing fundamental questions about the concept of the city, its transformations, and the reasons for its emergence and development over time. He also touched upon the topic of urban formation as a key element in understanding the internal structure of cities and their contemporary challenges. In the afternoon, Dr. Farhati Berkahem continued the workshop with a scientific session in which she addressed the city as a public good, highlighting the role of law in maintaining urban balance and ensuring the optimal use of urban spaces. She also presented a historical overview of the National Public Museum of Boussaâda as a heritage institution reflecting collective memory. The city and its urban development.
The workshop provided an opportunity for extensive discussion between students and professors on the current issues facing Algerian cities and the challenges confronting urban planners in light of social and economic transformations.
The workshop concluded with an exchange of views and recommendations that emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of urbanism among students and equipping them with the tools for analyzing urban space, in line with the requirements of modern urban development.
