On Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Shanghai, China, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr. Kamel Beldari, reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment, led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) across various sectors.
During his participation in the high-level international conference on AI governance in Shanghai, the minister highlighted Algeria’s commitment, led by President Tebboune, to developing and integrating AI governance in scientific, educational, and economic sectors, as well as establishing infrastructure at universities, research centers, and developing human capacities. This commitment acknowledges the importance of this modern technological strategy in enhancing competitiveness and innovation.
The minister also mentioned the establishment of a National Scientific Council for Artificial Intelligence, which acts as a scientific advisory body aimed at proposing strategic elements for the development of AI across multiple sectors, along with the creation of specialized academic institutions such as the National School of Artificial Intelligence.
Additionally, the minister proposed a set of principles for international AI governance, starting with ensuring equitable access to AI technologies and their benefits for all countries, bridging the digital divide to enable emerging countries to use and develop AI technology, and promoting ethical use of this technology.
He emphasized the need to incorporate contextual adaptability with cultural, economic, and social beliefs of different countries, enabling inclusive decision-making to allow emerging countries to participate in international governance decisions, developing a workforce to create a global AI market, and respecting intellectual property rights of countries and peoples
